Art Committee

Fountain Street Church offers a rich art and architectural history to the congregation and the greater West Michigan community. The Art Committee is the conservator of this heritage. It builds on Fountain Street's tradition of nurture and appreciation for the artistic, cultural, and intellectual fruits of the human spirit in concert with the mission and vision of our church. The Committee stages seven art exhibits each year in The Keeler Gallery. Work by artists in a variety of media enlightens the spirits of our diverse congregation and serves as an outreach to the greater West Michigan community.

Paintings of Wietze Adema: A Solo exhibition

Wietze Adema was born in the Netherlands, immigrated to Canada with his family, and obtained U.S. citizenship after graduation from Calvin College in Grand Rapids.

In 1987 he received an MFA from Western Michigan University. His work is in public collections including the Toronto Public Library, Grand Rapids Public Library, and the Grand Rapids Arts Council, as well as many private collections.

He was Artist in Residence at the Byron Center Fine Arts Center in 2018 and the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center in 2019.

About his work, Mr. Adema says, “In my search for clarity in the chaos around me, I usually turn to landscape or streetscape as metaphor. My work is based on photos, sketches, or memory. My hope is to give a personal expression that is both powerful and revealing.”

ArtPrize

The annual ArtPrize event in Grand Rapids is the most ambitious of our seven exhibits. Each year the Art Committee hosts a unique, juried ArtPrize venue on the theme "Art to Change the World, Inspiring Social Justice."

Art plays an important role as an agent for social and economic justice and peace in the world. We select works that focus attention on human rights and freedom of expression. We engage two independent jurors to award two $1000 prizes. The prizes are sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Fountain Street Church Social Action Committee. Prize winners are announced at an opening reception for artists, friends, and congregants. Fountain Street Church is the only venue across all of ArtPrize to offer independent cash prizes. Since the inception of ArtPrize, artists showing work at Fountain Street Church have received more than $17,000 in ArtPrize juror awards and independent prizes.
