On Sunday we greet you at the door with a smile, give you a program, and help you to a seat, if you need it. We are also available before and after church if someone needs help to find a staff member.
The Ushers are also available, upon request, to usher at memorial services, concerts, or special events held at the church. We also assist Character School with fire drills. We conduct several fundraisers each year, and donate most of the money back to the church in some manner. We ask the staff for suggestions or ideas on how to best help the church. In the past we have donated to Pastors Fund B, the Character School, the Church garden, etc. Most recently we purchased a die cutting machine for the Character School staff.
The Ushers meet the first Sunday of every month before church, and have an end of the year dinner in May, with the staff. They try to squeeze in a fall potluck, too.
Dr. Jim Irwin, an usher, found the following in the Wall Street Journal and it explains about people who become ushers:
THEY ALSO SERVE. Those in the pulpit may get all the attention, but the National United Church Ushers Association of America wants people to know that its members consider their job – to "meet, greet, and seat" – a calling, too. "Everybody has a ministry, and that could be a preacher or a missionary," Ushers President Johnnie Knighton told the Hartford Courant, "I always wanted to usher."
If you have a calling to be an usher, please approach any usher and ask how you can participate.
