Coming of Age

Each year the 8th grade-aged youth (13-14 yrs. old) of FSC are invited to participate in a several month long coming of age process.  Designed to serve both youth and families and their world, as well as the exploration and articulation of their own credo, "I Believe" statements.  The process kicks off with an all-family after-church meeting in January and continues with bi-weekly, youth-only after-church meetings through April.  A local weekend retreat and a 5-day travelling service trip, (previously New York City), provide settings for reflection, challenge, and play.  The process concludes with a celebratory dinner in April and recognition during the Bridging Worship Service on Mother's Day.  Seasoned Coming of Age Ministry Leader and FSC member, Beth Lively, will lead the process this year.  If you and/or your youth and family are interested in participating and have further question's about this year's program, please contact Beth Lively at (616) 447-9591 or our Minister of Spiritual Life and Learning, Matthew Cockrum at either (616) 459-8386 ext. 215 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Coming of Age Service Trip

This year's Coming of Age crew heads to Washington, D.C., March 10-14, accompanied by Matthew Cockrum and Ministry Leaders Beth Lively and Joel Penny.  They will join 13 8th graders on a road trip of self-discovery, reflection, and service.  They will be exploring the nation's capitol, the notions of "giants" who guide our lives, and will participate in a work camp sponsored by the Quaker-run Youth Service Opportunities Project (YSOP).  If you have words of wisdom, blessings, or inspirations that you would like to share with our youth while they are on the trip, please e-mail them to Matthew at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or drop them in the Church office by March 10th.
