Music

Junior Choir (boys and girls in grades 1 thru 5 without audition) All children in grades 1 through 5 are invited to sing in the FSC Junior Choir. This group practices every Sunday from 10:00 to 10:50 in the Choir Room and performs in church services throughout the school year. Basic principles of music and singing are taught in an atmosphere of fun and friendship. Children may be registered at any rehearsal. Contact the church office if you have questions.

Ars Nova (youth in grades 6 thru 12 without audition) All youth in grades 6 through 12 are invited to sing in the FSC Ars Nova Choir. This group practices every Sunday during the school year from 3:00 to 4:00 in the Choir Room. The group performs in worship about once a month and at special services such as the late Christmas Eve service, Easter Day, and Reverence for Life Sunday. The group also provides music for an FSC summer service and sometimes sings in other churches. Call the church office if you would like more information.

Adult Choir The Adult Choir meets in the Choir Room on Thursday evenings, gathering at 7:15 and rehearsing from 7:30 to 9:30. The choir sings in worship almost every Sunday from September 1 to early June, and on Christmas Eve, Good Friday, and other special occasions. From January through March the choir also rehearses on Saturday mornings from 10:30 to 12:00 in preparation for a major Memorial Concert in the spring, traditionally on Palm Sunday afternoon. The choir’s primary purpose is to contribute a variety of excellent music in worship at Fountain Street Church. The Choir is open to all who have a gift for singing, a desire to use that gift in service to the church, and a willingness to invest the time to put the two together. A brief interview with the director is required before choir membership becomes permanent. Previous experience reading music is a great asset but not indispensable. Call the church office if you would like more information.

Lenten Jazz

Lent is a season of soul searching.  Particularly in America, that spirit of searching is expressed musically in the jazz idiom.  This unique musical voice arose from the social and spiritual challenges faced by African Americans, especially those with a memory of, or connection to, slavery.  During each Sunday in Lent, Fountain Street will present in its Worship Service, a different jazz artist from the church and local community as an echo of that time.  The musicians call us to engage our hearts and minds in a soulful search for purpose and hope, even when purpose and hope appear difficult to grasp.  Guest musicians will include Bob Taylor, Wright McCargar, Junior Valentine, Edye Evans Hyde, Robin Connell, and the Grand Rapids Women's Chorus.

Do You Play an Instrument?

Or have you in the past?  The Music Committee of FSC is looking for people who play an instrument or want to revive their interest in playing and would like to assist in future Worship Services.  Your level of skill, while an important factor, is not a primary one.  Wanting to have fun is a MUST, however!  This could be a wonderful opportunity to revive your love of music-making!  To be notified of upcoming possibilities for performance, please contact Michael Crawford at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it and leave your name, phone number, and/or e-mail address, plus the type of instrument you play.
