Character School Candle Lighting Prayer
We light this candle for truth.
May the light of truth always be with us.
We light this candle for love.
May the light of love always be with us.
We are the people of Fountain Street Church.
People with open minds, people with loving hearts, and people with welcoming hands.
Character School is a community where we cultivate open minds, loving hearts, and welcoming hands. Character School is the Fountain Street Church version of "Sunday School" or "Church School," where we come together on Sunday mornings to learn and explore, play and discover, serve and connect with others. Children delight in being part of kind and caring classroom circles where they are invited to share their highlights and challenges of the week, (also known as “roses and thorns”), with their Fountain Street friends. Through a diversity of program offerings, children explore the teachings and practices of many world religions and spiritual traditions from across our community and the planet.
If you are visiting FSC with your family for the first time
All families are welcome at Fountain Street Church. We invite you to learn more about our educational programming for all ages. On Sunday mornings, an Usher or Greeter will be glad to show you the way to the 2nd Floor where you'll find an Information Table about offerings, as well as staff who can respond to any questions you may have. There is also a live video feed of the 11:00 a.m. Worship Service available in the Resource Room, which is also on the 2nd Floor.
Every Sunday morning, there is Nursery Care available for infants and toddlers in Room 206. All new families are asked fill out a visitor form during their first visit and all returning families need to fill out a registration form. For the safety of all, parents are asked to sign-in their children when they arrive and sign-out when they depart their classrooms. Monthly Workshop Cycle
Sacred Story Sundays (Religious Literacy) - These Sundays will often include Spirit Circle, as well as workshops on the power of sharing stories from the world’s religious traditions. Stories will be presented in a variety of ways and there will be time for children to reflect and respond to the stories via creative arts, free play, and drama.
Social Action Sundays - These Sundays are becoming a beloved tradition among Character School children when they engage in the task of service-learning through hands-on projects that benefit our community partners.
Compassion Sundays (Moral Competency) - These Sunday sessions will focus on character education and cultivating our capacity to be compassionate human beings. Through creativity, conversation, and community, we’ll explore the big questions together. Using a wonderful series on character education as our framework, we’ll be exploring questions like: What is Peace? What is Beautiful? What is Right? What is Friendship? What is Love? What is Family? What is God? What is Respect?
Movement, Mindfulness, & Music Sundays (Spiritual Fluency) - These Sundays will engage children and youth in a variety of spiritual practices that allow them to develop skills and tools to find center and be centered in their daily lives. In addition to exploring a variety of movement practices from the world’s religious and spiritual traditions, we’ll also welcome musical guests to lead us in song, learn basic mindfulness practices, and engage in a variety of movement practices.
Special events include seasonal Children’s Chapel Services, Community Potlucks, Parent Check-Ins with the Rev. Elizabeth Barnum, and holiday traditions including Halloween Celebrations, Christmas Eve Pageant, Lunar New Year, Reverence for Life Sunday, and Bridging Sunday.
